We cannot forget that all human beings are sexed beings from the time we are born till we die.
It is true that the age and illness typical of elderly may difficult an active sexuality as it used to be at earlier stages in life, but this does not mean that sexuality during elderly is only a memory from the past, on the contrary, sexual relations at this age may be an essential part of life, especially if people were sexually active during their youth.
Sexuality does not only has to be expressed through sexual relations, it can be expressed with closeness, physical contact, affection and intimacy, and sexual relations too.
It is undeniable that sex is different from the way it used to be before, in this stage of life, since there are real changes at a physiological level, because elderly men and women tend to feel less sexual tension, have less sexual relations and experiment less physical intensity.
Sexual drive is still present but at a lower degree. Man need more time to have an erection and ejaculate and has lower levels of testosterone. Sexual excitement signs are less intense in women, but both can have orgasms.
The most important thing here is to emphasize that humans must have the capacity to accept our own sexuality in this stage of life, to accept that things have change and that life is full of cycles that open and close constantly and we must have the capacity to normally adapt to each stage in life without hating it or denying that moment of our lives we are going through.
