Does devoting totally to God mean to forget about everything else?
By: Ricardo Valle Andrés (seminarist)
Devoting your life to the service of God is a wonderful gift, it means to abandon totally to Him. It does not mean to forget about everything else, but it certainly means to find a greater value that gives sense to your life, it means not having attachments or fondness for no one and for nothing. In today’s society we are literally bombed with a number of satisfactors and we can feel tempted to get those satisfactors and forget about the greatest good we have devoted to, God.
“Calling is not renounce, it is devotion”.
When you devote your life totally to God, you do not forget about everything else, but your devotion makes you see things in a different way, you do not have earthly attachments, it means that you do not pay attention to material goods, you don’t need to feel loved by others, you’d rather be filled with God’s love so as to be able to love others evangelically.
Your mayor concern is to help souls to find salvation, through preaching, listening, accompanying, praying and being an example of life.
Recently, material values have become very important, people want their personal satisfaction and look for the satisfactors that our present society has to offer. For some people, money symbolizes happiness. This kind of things moves us away from the real Christian path, we forget that the most important part of having is sharing, we become selfish, we get hold of many attachments and forget that there is something essential: the Divine Providence. If we are people of faith, we must know that we will always have the most essential things to live, that is why we must love God with all our spirit and all our heart.
To forget about superfluous matters and value those that are really important, it is very helpful to understand and abandon oneself in Christ to be able to love others.
