What does it mean to be a strict priest?

By: Ricardo Valle Andrés (seminarist)

Some priests think that being radical in their lives means being radical with the others. This is a huge mistake, they could provoke that people that come to them, move away from God. Being radical in our own life must help us to understand how difficult it is to follow the path of God and therefore understand others with love and mercy.

A strict Priest, What does it mean? Being strict to oneself does not mean to demand from others what it is being so difficult for us. One must be very radical in one’s life, but we have to understand that it is not easy for everybody to be radical. A priest must be understanding, loving, in a word Charitable.

People who come to a priest want to find God’s love, not judgments from priests. It is very dangerous to demand from people more than they are able to give, or treat them roughly because instead of bringing them close to God they can move people away from God and if they do not move away we will make them commit the sin of SCRUPLE.

A Christian life must be led by evangelic radicalness, but we have to help people that is disoriented, desperate, and sad because of the sin, to understand that the love of God is so great and that with His help, we can be better individuals, and that we must not move away from the divine grace.

Being strict must make us more merciful with others, more understanding, because when one is strict one knows how difficult it is to lead one´s life in the right way, one knows about the pain of wanting to do things right and not being able to do it so easily, of setting goals and sweat blood to reach them. Isn´t it enough the pain of one person to understand the others´?
