Contraception

By: Juan Bernardi

All Monsignor Caffarra´s vocational training, I do not know if you have heard about him or if you have read his work, but that clear structure of his, reminds me of some classes I had the opportunity of taking with him…

What a great capacity we have, as human beings, of loving, but loving with all our heart with our body...

That is what sexual faculty is, a great gift from God because with it we can express the total and definite love we feel for our couple, it gives me the opportunity to offer my couple not only my body and my soul but the chance to be a father or a mother through me.

Sexed love is the possibility of giving everything I am and have and receiving everything my couple is and has.

In addition, sexed love is the unique possibility that gives an individual the capacity of being a father or a mother through another human being…

It can be compared with the faculty of seeing, that allows us to see the universe wonders or hearing that allows us to hear so many beautiful things.

When we realize how wonderful the sexual faculty is, I mean, the characteristical language of total and definite love, it comes to my mind immediately the contraceptive act that is aimed at destroying partially or totally this faculty!!!

The only thought of artificial contraception, that means to involve, in that total love, an obstacle that says wait, I love you but not completely, because I reject your fertility.

This can never be good or licit. Acting against the good of unity or the good of procreation, that is, the possibility of giving life to a new human being, which is always good… diminishes a total devotion, represents a lie in the commitment, means to distort the greatest act mankind has access to.

This is very clear to all of us who know about it, who have the opportunity to read, however, many people say: Church teaching is retrogressive, because It does not allow the use of contraceptives but allows natural methods. Huge mistake, How to understand how deep this reflection is? It is a shame, the problem is the lack of information, how to touch so many people that in their hurry to live, never stop to contemplate the wonder of life! They do not stop to meditate on what the individual really is and what he/she has been called to…

For example, to accept the use of “contraceptives” as a medicine to help women with physical difficulties to regulate their periods. This people forget that moral is always judged as an act of will when such act may have an exact external manifestation and a totally different internal one. I can give money to help someone (act of charity), to pay someone (act of justice), or to bribe someone (immoral act), same act but very different purpose… the same happens when you use hormones to regulate your periods (healing act) or to avoid procreation (contraceptive act).

It is convenient to say that there is a huge difference between a non-procreative act and a contraceptive one. Human beings are limited and we cannot do all the good we would like to, if the money we have is hardly enough to support our family, we cannot give money as a charity although it is a very good thing, or if someone is called to the consecrated life as a priest, he cannot get married although married life is a wonderful good. The same thing happens with procreation; in many circumstances it is not so good to bring a new life to this world, in those cases we can use the infertile periods, this is what is called responsible paternity.

It is as if a person, who were not able to give alms would try to make everybody believe that they should not do it either because it is bad, or if a priest would try to attack marriage as something bad to society, because he has the celibacy vocation.

Obviously they would be wrong because they consider wrong what is good and they attack it, they would be guilty of that mistake, because they should have formed their conscience in time, with the adequate people and if they really looked for the truth and were faithful to it.

It is clear that on infertile periods everything is given without reserve, on the other hand when we talk about contraception not everything is given because in an act of free will we are excluding fertility, which is a wonderful gift.

Regarding the unitive good that is present in the conjugal act. It is true that sometimes it is not convenient to do it, when the spouse feels bad or when he/she is sad, etc…. in that case the only answer is abstinence, but not a painful abstinence but a sublimated abstinence for the good we want to reach, which is the total responsibility for our acts, and the decisions we make, which bring us closer to what we really are, rational beings.
