Some Aspects in which Pornography Affects Family

By: Cecilia Rivera (theologian)

1. FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS ARE SERIOUSLY AFFECTED

When sexual conduct is perverted, it seriously affects every area of your life: the relationship with God, with yourself, with the couple, with children, with the opposite sex in general, and with all the important people in your personal life. Pornography perverts sexual conduct and the first victim is THE FAMILY, because it is essentially anti-family:

a) Excludes procreation.

b) Harms and disrupts the love relation between the couple because sex becomes a personal pleasure.

c) Glorifies frequency, intensity and longevity of sexual powers.

d) Separates sex from love and commitment.

e) Sex outside marriage is much more exciting because of the chemical alteration and the combination of fear, guilt and fantasy. The combination of guilt, fear and sexual excitation, produces a state of euphoria with a “detachment level” close to ecstasy.

f) It promotes infidelity, adultery, fornication in all its manifestations, as incest, masturbation, homosexuality, cruelty, group sex relations, sadomasochism, women and children abuse.

Such euphoria prevents from having normal relations: without love, because normal sexual experiences will never be the same as the pornographic experiences previously seen. Because if you love and trust the person you are having sex with, you experiment confidence and then the risk, guilt, shame and all those danger feelings that excite so much disappear.

2. IT IS ADDICTIVE

Something that starts as simple curiosity may become a really destructive obsession; the initial excitement, rarely is enough so every time people demand and need more explicit and violent material. It is more addictive when it starts at early ages and we can mention 4 steps that describe it:

1) Addiction to material that exacerbates lust.

2) Demands for more explicit and violent material.

3) Easier acceptance of cruel material and greater insensitivity.

4) Impulse of acting what we see.

3. ATACKS

Causes damages:
• To the addicted person. Pornography may cause irreparable damage to brain, damaging the good judgment and self-control that every human being must have so as not to become a beast. Pornography promotes a destructive and negative fantasy that isolates from others, becoming a lonely addiction. Due to the fact that pornography always works better in the imagination, it is there where it stays, causing many times impotence, because it is very difficult that the couple responds or arouses in the same delirious way showed in pornography.

• To innocent people. Some conducts such as rape has its origin in pornography.

• To society. Corrupts and pervert the GIFT of sex that must not be separated from marriage because it is meant for procreation and reciprocal union. Corrupts society, trying to give homosexuals and lesbians the same “rights” of expressing themselves, as well as prostitutes and their “brothel keepers”. To assure that people who trade or deal with human beings for slavery or vice purposes are “honest” is like saying that thieves, assassins or thugs are “honest people”.

We find many cases of murder after a rape; it is not strange because those victims (children, youngsters…) were already seen as objects, as something that can be used and if it bothers can be destroyed; the murderer addicted to pornography is used to seeing other people as mere pleasure objects.

4. PORNOGRAPHY AND MASS MEDIA

• Internet. Pornography industry has new protagonists: Internet sites, which have taken over the traditional industry that worked through videos and magazines. The reduction in prices of filming and publishing technology allows the publication of pornographic material at a minimum cost; and distribution is very easy through Internet. The anonymity and interactivity explain the millionaire business of “telephone sex” in USA amounting almost to 1.000 million dollars a year. Virtual reality allows hearing, seeing and touching.
