Is Condom effective in AIDS Prevention?
By: Dr. Hugo Obiglio (doctor and member of the “Academy of Moral Sciences” and “Pontifical Academy for Life”).
Once again mass media approach the aids topic in a wrong but well-intentioned way, insisting on the so-called “safe sex” as useful for the prevention and control of this pandemy.
The same thing happens with international organizations, directly or indirectly related with health, when they point out condom as the ultimate tool of “safe sex”.
On the one hand science has shown beyond doubt, through some researches that the component material of condoms is not considered as an insurmountable barrier.
Different researches show that the efficiency, at best, would be of 88%. This means that there is a 12% rate of possibility of contamination. If we add this numbers up together with pre-existing pathologies, multiple sex partners, usage improvisation, quality defects, etc., the risk of infection increases geometrically.
Sell and free distribution of condoms increases significantly every year, nevertheless international organizations reveal an increase in sick people (around 40 million).
Months ago a group of scientists in the called “program ABC” (Abstinence, Fidelity and Condom; in Spanish: “Abstinencia, Fidelidad y Condón”) stated that from now on the struggle against HIV should become, abstinence, fidelity and condom.
Now: I think I must state that the third element of the proposal should be eliminated: the condom, because, I insist, science and modern technology have not been able to show its safety.
Uganda is an example of what I think should be promoted: they applied a successful preventive logic plan based on education and abstinence, which reduced in one digit (from 15% to 5%) HIV contamination. Talking about the truth is hard; but if you do you have to commit yourself.
