St. Elizabeth of Hungry “She lived a happy marriage, when she became a widow she decided to devote her life to God”

Elizabeth was King Andrew II of Hungary’s daughter; she was born in Presburg (now Bratislava), she was brought up in Thuringia at Warburg Palace, together with his fiancé Louis IV of Thuringia, whom she married in 1221.

They were a happy marriage with three children: Isabel led a simple life; she always helped people who needed her, she gave away generous alms and founded hospitals for the poor. Her husband, Louis IV, left in 1227 for a crusade together with Frederick II; he died after three months because of the plague.

Isabel thought she would die of pain, but short after, she decided to change the course of her life. She rejected the idea of getting married again as she had been advised and in 1228 she moved to Marburg, close to her confessor, Conrado of Marburg. She entered the 3rd. Franciscan order and lived in total poverty; she helped elder people, sick and homeless and she built a hospital. She died a few years later.
