Things to avoid while praying
Rosario Alfaro Martínez
A life of prayer is difficult and we cannot neglect it, that is why we should avoid the following situations:
• RUTINE: when prayer becomes a pure mechanic exercise without value and without life; or it becomes a habit with a certain semi-unconscious automatism, prayer is not a love relation any more.
• EXCESS OF NATURAL ACTIVITY: we are not referring to physical activity or work but to the fact of trusting too much in our actions so that things we ask for happen, this is not trusting that God is going to do the things.
• PASIVITY OR INERETIA: this is the other extreme, when we do not do the minimum effort with the excuse of not going against God’s will.
• DISCOURAGE: specially when people think that NO matter how much they pray they will not be heard and they stop praying.
• EXCESIVE OPTIMISM: specially those people that consider themselves almost saints because they devote 30 minutes a day to God, or those who think they are better than the rest of the world because they pray.
• ATTACHMENT TO TANGIBLE CONSOLATION: it is a kind of spiritual greed that encourages the soul to look for the consolation of God instead of looking for the God of consolation.
• EXCESSIVE ATTACHMENT TO A SPECIAL METHOD: as if that method were the only one possible for praying, or the excessive inconstancy that moves us to do without or abandon before time.
For these reasons it is important to count on somebody to help us to be a person of prayer.
“A moment of real adoration is more valuable and has more spiritual results than the most intensive activity, even if it is the apostolic activity itself ” JOHN PAUL II.
NOTHING WITHOUT PRAYING AND EVERYTHING AS A RESULT OF PRAYING!
