Praying for one thing and… receiving another one
Rosario Alfaro Martínez
Many times we insist that God grants us what we want, but we must be aware of one thing: GOD KNOWS WHAT IS BETTER FOR US AND HE WANTS TO GIVE US THE BEST, SOMETIMES WE HAVE THE WRONG IDEA THAT God is against our interests or that if we ask Him for something He will not hear us just to harm us, but it is not like that.
When we do not receive something we ask in prayer, most of the times it is because God plans to give us something better, or because it is not the right moment to receive it.
We can find an example of this in St. Mark’s Gospel chapter 2, versicles 1-12. This is the story of four men that take a paralytic to Jesus so that He heals this man, but it happens that Jesus does not heal him immediately, Jesus tells him: “Your sins will be forgiven”. This was not what the four man went to ask for, besides it caused a great scandal among the crowd the fact that someone dared to forgive someone’s sins, since that was something that only God could do. They asked Jesus one thing and they received something totally different, most probably the sick man said: heal me! But Jesus was giving him something more important than physical health, He was forgiving his sins and afterwards He healed him. God blessed him with something greater than he had asked for. On the other hand He showed that He had both powers of forgiving sins and healing people.
Many times we do not let God give us the good things He wants to give us because of our short vision, it is important to remember that when we pray we have to try to see with God’s eyes what He wants to give us, because most probably it will be something better including what we are asking for. We have to remember that:
"What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him," (1 Co. 2, 9).
THE SILENCE OF GOD
Many people think that God keeps silence when we sin, but some times it is not like that, as an example we have Job in the Bible and in the story of many saints, who spent long time without even being able of feeling the presence of God.
So, in order to know why God keeps silence we have to take many things into consideration and not only one. The best thing to do is wait for God and keep on praying.
