Does God have a plan for sexuality?
By: ALMAS, A.C.
Throughout the course of history, man has questioned the meaning and main aim of life, existence, time, love, good and bad and also sexuality. Recently it seems that more than any other thing, man questions about sexuality. Just take a look at the number of advertisements, TV commercials, or magazine articles on sexuality. Unfortunately we are not looking for information on sexuality with its own Creator, but with other people that only can provide “incomplete truths” or “complete lies” that even make us think that God has nothing to do with sexuality and we think that “others can have a better explanation of it.
But that is not truth, today we can see two extremist and wrong attitudes regarding sexuality:
1.- On one side we have the hedonist and utilitarian attitude, where the only objective is the satisfaction of impulses and senses, the most important thing is pleasure and physical satisfaction, and that I feel good. The most dangerous aspect of this attitude is that it reduces people of mere sexual objects and means of satisfaction.
2.- On the other side, we have that attitude that considers sexuality as a taboo, as something embarrassing, dirty and wrong, that can only be tolerated for procreation, something like a necessary evil.
Both attitudes are wrong, since the REAL MEANING OF SEXUALITY (to give it a name), is that it is a gift from God, granted to man to make him a collaborator of creation through fertility, that emerges from a marital love devotion between man and woman.
Sexuality goes according to God plans when it respects its two objectives: UNITING and PROCREATING.
• UNITING: that means, when sexuality is a means to express love. For example when a married couple practice their sexuality, in an act of devotion, it is good and allowed that they enjoy the pleasure that sexual relations provide. In fact this physical pleasure is also a capacity that God gave to man and that has as objective, the union of husband and wife.
• PROCREATING: It means to be open to life. To be conscious that love itself is fertile.
In this sense sexuality cannot be consider as something bad, quite the opposite, it comes from God and by nature, sexuality is GOOD, we could even call it sacred because it is so closely connected to fertility. Nevertheless we cannot forget that due to the nature of man and as a consequence of the original sin, sexuality is not well understood and when it is not made into a whole with love, it might become a sin, it means that it can hurt the love relationship between God and the human being. It is useful to remember that although “flesh is weak”, every human being has the freedom, will and intelligence that allow him to live sexuality according to God’s plan.
If we have doubts about God’s plan for sexuality, we can adopt the sixth and ninth commandments as a guide, so that, in this way we discover that sexuality is part of our nature it is a way of being an individual and that sexual relations, exclusively allowed within marriage, is a gift from God for love, that have implied the gift of fertility. For this reason, sexuality is GOOD because it make us similar to our Creator, it makes of us a real image of a God that LOVES and gives LIFE.
