What does chastity mean?

By: Diana García y Rosario Alfaro Martínez

Maybe some of the most frequently asked questions among young people are: why do we have to wait? and what does chastity mean?, nowadays we could think that nobody practices it or promotes it.

Chastity means self-control in the capacity to orient the sexual instinct to the service of love and to integrate it in the development of the person. Church tells us in the Educational Orientations on human love:

“Chastity is exactly that virtue of commanding, controlling and dominating, a kind of heart gymnastics that keeps in shape the sexual dimension of the individual and his/her potentiality for greater love”.

It is the best way to understand and, above all, to value love. It is not a denial of sexuality, but the best preparation for marital life.

Chastity is the virtue that helps us to know ourselves and to be able to truly love others and feel loved by them.

Living chastity does not mean:

• Not feeling attraction towards the opposite sex

• Not having attraction feelings for your girlfriend or your boyfriend

• Not having bad thoughts, but restrain them in the very moment we become aware of them.

• Not having sexual impulses

All these things can live inside us, but the important thing is that we learn how to restrain them and we take control of our own body.

We have to say, however, that this is not the most important virtue in Christian life, the most important virtue is LOVE and CHARITY, but Chastity is a subordinated virtue, it is not about KEEPING BACK, it is about saving oneself to DEVOTE, that is the meaning of Chastity.
