Differences among sex, sexuality and genitality Diana Garcνa

We can get confused when we talk about sex or sexuality and we reduce it to pure genitality. We use these three words as if they had the same meaning, but it is time to make a difference among them.

Sex

• Organic condition that differentiates male from female in heterogametic organisms.

• Feminine and masculine sex.

• Group of masculine or feminine sexual organs, especially the external ones.

Genitality

• Regarding human being and animal sex and reproductive system.

Sexuality

• It is a basic element of personality; a personal way of being, of showing yourself, of communicating with others, of feeling, of expressing and living human love.

• Human sexuality is specifically different from that of animals. Sexuality is not identified with genitality.

• Sexuality involves everything: psychology, human relations, our own personality. It influences the way of understanding each other and understanding reality. A reflection on sexuality can only be made from an integral conception of the person. Wondering about sex is wondering about human being. Every activity, conduct, feeling and emotion is impregnated by sexuality.
